This policy explains cookies and similar browser storage used by africaeducationwatch.org. It should be read with our Privacy Policy. It reflects the current website implementation and is intended to support transparency under Ghana’s Data Protection Act, 2012 (Act 843) and, where applicable, the EU GDPR and ePrivacy rules as implemented in national law.
1. What are cookies and similar technologies?
Cookies are small text files stored by a browser. Similar technologies, including local storage, let a website store or read information on your device. Some storage is needed to remember a choice or provide a feature; optional storage should only be used with the choice you make where consent is required.
2. What this website currently uses
| Name | Type/category | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
aew_consent | First-party cookie; necessary | Remembers the consent version, time, and category choices so the site can apply and respect your decision. | Up to 12 months |
aew_consent | Local storage; necessary | Stores a copy of your consent choice so the site can read it if cookie access is unavailable. | Expires logically after 12 months; stale values are cleared when the consent manager next runs. |
aew-theme | Local storage; preferences | Remembers the dark/light theme if you have allowed Preferences. The theme control works for the current visit even if you do not allow this storage. | Until you change the theme, clear browser storage, or withdraw Preferences consent. If consent expires, the stored theme is removed when the consent manager next runs. |
The consent record stored on our server contains the choice categories and time/version, not your name or newsletter email address. Standard hosting logs may independently record the request details, as described in the Privacy Policy.
3. Optional categories and third parties
The consent interface includes Preferences, Analytics, and Marketing categories. At present, the website does not load analytics or marketing scripts or set analytics/marketing cookies. Those categories are available for future integrations only; a choice to allow them does not itself load a service that is not installed.
Videos use a click-to-load approach: YouTube is contacted only after you choose to play a video. When the player loads, Google/YouTube may process device and connection information and may use its own cookies or similar technologies under its own terms. External links can also take you to services with their own privacy and cookie practices.
4. Choose, change, or withdraw consent
On your first visit, you can accept all, reject all optional categories, or customize your choice. You can revisit or change the choice at any time using in the footer. Necessary storage used to remember your decision cannot be switched off through the consent controls.
You can also delete cookies and local storage through your browser settings. If you clear them, the consent banner may appear again and some preferences will no longer be remembered. Browser controls for blocking cookies may affect site functionality.
Withdrawing consent does not affect the lawfulness of any processing carried out before withdrawal. We stop using optional storage controlled by this site according to your updated choice.
5. Legal framework
Where applicable, the consent choices are intended to support the EU GDPR requirements for consent and the ePrivacy Directive rules on storing or accessing information on a user’s device, as implemented in the relevant country. Ghanaian personal-data processing is addressed under the Data Protection Act, 2012 (Act 843). The legal requirements that apply depend on the circumstances and the relevant national law.
